Authentic music and STEM experiences for tweens and teens.

By nature, the arts are aesthetic and designed to connect with our emotions. By contrast, we approach STEM pragmatically. Each discipline represents a skill set that, when combined, can build a bridge or solve a medical dilemma. Indeed, as we cross a bridge, we can marvel at the simplicity and elegance of its design. However, beautiful or not, the purpose of a bridge is to span rivers and valleys, and this practical, pragmatic mindset led me to create Dr. Mark’s STEMusic.
Dr. Mark’s STEMusic is a low-tech, hands-on way of studying the principles that help humans produce sounds and music. While technology is important it cannot replace the kinesthetic experiences that our minds require to understand the laws and principles that govern our physical world. Therefore, these experiences feature practical mechanical design principles using simple machines and have the scientific method embedded into every experience. But the best thing is that they allow for learning outside!
Dr. Mark’s STEMusic begins with sound and not music. Music is the byproduct of combining sounds into rhythmic and melodic patterns. The unsung heroes of the music we passionately listen to are the hands and minds of the craftsman who built the flute we play or the minds that understand airflow and resistance to create a magnificent pipe organ – a remarkable feat of engineering and design. Our mission is to draw attention to the art, design, and craftsmanship required to build musical instruments and, hopefully, inspire the next generation of instrument makers to stand on the shoulders of Martin, Stradivarius, and Steinway.

Services

Professional Development

Summer workshops and in-services deepen teachers’ professional and pedagogical skills through building and manipulating sound. Active participation is encouraged. We offer professional development

  • in-person,
  • virtual,
  • on-demand.

Building Sound

We can facilitate 6-12 grade students’ learning experiences on your campus or virtually. All experiences involve building and manipulating sound, experimentation, and collecting data and are linked to grade-level math and science standards. Below, you can see our current offerings.

Spinning Wheels

This experience focuses on understanding how speed relates to the harmonic series, partials, and overtones. Students build and alter sound with a bike, and measure and collect data.

Permutations & Combinations

This music and math experience focuses on altering the structure of a familiar song, conducting an experiment, collecting data, and presenting findings.

Aerophone Build

In this experience, students design and build a wind instrument out of *CPVC, collect data, create a math equation, graph their data, and create a simple melody.

*CA Prop65

Gearhead Music

This experiences requires students to alter the speed of a spinning disc by altering the ratio to a set of gears. On the disc, students place aluminum chimes to create different hertz (pitches) and determine duration and distance between each sound. This experience involves collecting data.

Music Puzzles

The Music Puzzles provide students with an introduction to a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), Audacity – it’s free. In this experience, students have the opportunity to create their own “cover” (version) of a familiar song in the public domain with high-quality digital sounds. In addition to math standards, the Music Puzzles focus on executive function, and persistence.
