A different kind of measuring stick.

Music is ideal for learning about and applying math concepts such as ratios, fractions, measurement, and persistence. Dr. Mark’s Music Puzzles are sonic Cuisenaire rods.

Systematically, students create their versions of beloved music from the public domain beginning with the whole, then two halves, then four quarters, and so on. It’s as simple as slicing a lemon, except this lemon has more color choices than yellow.

You may, like me, learn by doing. Below is a link for a free sample of a music puzzle and the instructions on how to complete it. I hope that you take a moment to download the puzzle, play around with it and then give the zip file to a tween or teen and get their feedback. Like you, I stumble, here and there, and learn from my missteps; so, let me know what you think and what kids think.
